When Juan says we'll be going through a planet-wide near death experience, I'm taking it to mean that we'll all personally feel it in some way, something huge that will make us all gasp.
Losing the entire internet and TV will do that. I can't think of anything else that could even come close to affecting us all so hard.
Death is loss. There would be nothing more devastating than to lose instant contact with all of that.
But once that is out of the way, the light can shine through.
